The Achieve a Better Life Experience Act has once again been put before the U.S. Congress, representing a bipartisan effort to aid those with disabilities in Pennsylvania and across the country. The ABLE Act would allow those with disabilities and their families to have a savings account in addition to any Social Security disability benefits, Medicaid or private insurance they may have.
National Disability Institute has supported the ABLE Act since its first introduction to Congress in 2009. It had more than 200 cosponsors in the House of Representatives and 20 in the Senate. Despite its vast support, that session of Congress ran out before the legislation could be moved forward.

The savings account that would be available through ABLE to those with disabilities would be tax-advantaged and available to cover the costs of health care, housing, education, transportation and technology. National Disability Institute's executive director said ABLE is a great way to "level the playing field" for those with disabilities and their families. It would offer financial security and independence to those who live with the disabilities that can be constraining or make everyday life difficult.
ABLE is viewed as a way to help those with disabilities achieve success and be active in their community even in a struggling economy. National Disability Institute's director of strategic partnerships has said that it will modernize America's disability policy and "is the right response to the extra costs of living a life with a disability."
National Disability Institute and other organizations and individuals who support the disability community will champion the legislation before Congress.
